FOUNDATIONS OF PROFICIENCY

Back by popular demand, Greg Duncan–an internationally recognized expert in World Language education–will lead the Foundations strand of the Proficiency Academy. In the Foundations strand, Greg will guide you through the ACTFL Proficiency levels, show you how to set proficiency targets for your program or course, help you design engaging and authentic performance assessments and rubrics, connect proficiency to course units and lessons using the NCSSFL-ACTFL Can-Do Statements, and prepare you to be an empowered educator with the support of the Teacher Effectiveness for Language Learning (TELL) Project. In addition to Greg’s high-quality sessions, you will join a smaller break-out group during the Academy led by facilitators experienced in teaching for proficiency. Handson and interactive, you will leave the Academy invigorated and with concrete materials to use when you return to school! Relevant to teachers of all languages. If you have not attended Proficiency Academy before (regardless of your background experience as a teacher), be sure to sign up for this strand. Come join the Proficiency movement!

PRINCIPLES OF PROFICIENCY: DEVELOPING A PROFICIENCY-FOCUSED CLASSROOM

New to Proficiency Academy this year, Greta Lundgaard will lead the Principles of Proficiency strand with a focus on developing proficiency-focused classroom instruction. Greta will lead you in assessing where you sit on the “Instructional Proficiency Scale,” using Can-Do statements as your guide. She will then delve into the tricky topics of teaching grammar as a concept and moving from vocabulary lists to strategies for active vocabulary acquisition, connecting the dots between proficiency, grammar, vocabulary, and overall classroom instruction. In addition to Greta’s high-quality sessions, you will join a smaller break-out group during the Academy led by facilitators experienced in teaching for proficiency. Hands-on and interactive, you will leave the Academy invigorated and with concrete materials to use when you return to school! Relevant to teachers of all languages. (We strongly recommend that you enroll in the Foundations strand prior to taking the Principles strand, regardless of your background. This strand expects a solid foundational understanding of teaching for proficiency.)
