The
Position The Cambridge School of Weston seeks a part-time Spanish (mostly) and French (highly desirable) teacher for the school year beginning September 2008. The position involves teaching Spanish 2 and 3, and French 2 and Transition to French 3 courses for grades 9 through 12. The ideal candidate will demonstrate expertise in Spanish and very significant strength in French. We are especially interested in those candidates who are passionate about progressive education and able to contribute to the diversity of CSW’s learning environment. The School A progressive, coeducational day and boarding school for 325 students in grades nine through twelve, the Cambridge School of Weston offers faculty an enormous amount of freedom to teach the subjects they care most about in the most powerful ways they can imagine. The school’s dynamic curriculum includes courses that focus on single books or authors (such as Les jeux sont faits ), integrate several disciplines (Latin American Dances or Fascism, Fundamentalism, Vichy France and Lepenism) and immerse students in subjects as sophisticated as Latin America and the Cold War or contact dance improvisation. Every other year, students have the opportunity to spend 4 weeks in Costa Rica, 3 weeks in France, a long weekend in Montréal and Québec or 3 weeks in Italy. The Foreign Language Department makes a great use of technology through its language lab, smartboard and digitizing and recording software. The school’s innovative “mod system” divides the school year into five-week mini-sem! esters that enable teachers and students to explore deeply a few subjects at a time. Teachers typically teach two 90-minute classes a day (occasionally with other teachers in different disciplines), advise a small group of students, and contribute to the community through a wide-range of co-curricular and extra-curricular activities. Most CSW students are self-directed, impassioned learners who play a significant role in designing their own educations—as they do in shaping the school’s policies. The school’s deep concern with the process of education supports a culture marked by thoughtful risk-taking, a receptivity to imaginative ideas and methods, and a real willingness to try out different ways of doing things.
