Resources for the Upcoming Months

Hey everyone.  I hope that if you attended ACTFL you returned energized and ready to tackle the next few months.  We are so pleased that we had the opportunity to partner with ACTFL right here in Boston for an in-person conference after so many virtual experiences.  It was so wonderful to see friends and colleagues from across the nation and to meet new colleagues and make new friends.  Thanks to all who made this possible.

CARLA Update Of Interest

Social Justice in Language Education Update
The Center for Advanced Research on Language Acquisition (CARLA) at the University of Minnesota is pleased to announce two new resources offered through its Social Justice in Language Education initiative.

Social Justice Planning Templates–New!
To help language educators incorporate social justice themes into their language classes, CARLA has developed three interrelated planning templates for creating curricular units grounded in target language texts: a curricular unit overview template, a lesson planning template, and a summative assessment template. These three templates will help language educators enact two complementary critical pedagogies that support the teaching of social justice topics: the multiliteracies framework (Cope & Kalantzis, 2015; New London Group, 1996) and the five components of social justice education (Hackman, 2005). The templates also incorporate social justice standards from the domains of identity, diversity, justice, and action (Learning for Justice, 2021).

To illustrate how the templates can be used to support social justice in language education, CARLA has also developed a two-week-long curricular unit titled Multicultural Paris, intended for intermediate-level learners of French. More curricular units in French, German, and Spanish will be published later this fall!

Discover how to use instructional planning templates created to support the integration of social justice themes into language classes. In this practical webinar, CARLA’s Social Justice in Language Education initiative leaders share unit, lesson plan, and summative assessment templates along with their accompanying user’s guides, and discuss how to use and adapt them to fit the needs of language teachers and students alike.

Presenters:

Lauren Goodspeed is a Lecturer in the Department of French and Italian and Director of the French Language Program. She is a co-leader of the LRC initiative Social Justice in Language Education.
Kate Paesani is the Director of the Center for Advanced Research on Language Acquisition (CARLA) and an Associate Professor in the Department of French and Italian. She is a co-leader of the LRC initiative Social Justice in Language Education.

Student Voices

Student Voices is a new publication from CAL which is so relevant.  You can learn more about it below and find it here.

What motivates students to study languages? How do our students prefer to learn languages? Does school actually “get in the way” of language learning?

To explore the learner’s perspec­tive on the current state of high school language learning, the National Council of State Super­visors for Languages (NCSSFL) organized a diverse group of students from across the country to share their insights on language learning.

The group consisted of six high school students from around the country. The students’ observations about their experiences are presented and discussed in a new Practitioner Brief published by the Center for Applied Linguistics.

Their stories are compelling not only on a personal level, but also for the picture of language learning that they painted for the audience that day. We were haunted by stories of the denial of opportunity because of class scheduling conflicts and troubled by stories of frustration with obstacles encountered, but we also heard stories of hope and opportunity.

The practitioner brief is divided into five overarching themes, from motivation to recommended activities.
