Urge your Sentors to Support Robust Funding for Title VI and Fulbright-Hays Program

Senators Brian Schatz (D-HI) and Todd Young (R-IN) are circulating an e-Dear Colleague letter to urge Senate Members to sign on and support robust funding for Title VI and Fulbright-Hays International Education and Foreign Language Studies programs at the Department of Education. Take action today to ask your Senators to sign on in support of this request.

There is a growing need for American professionals who have language abilities and cultural knowledge in an expanding range of sectors: health, cybersecurity, food safety, environment, law enforcement, engineering, and more. Unfortunately, the United States lags in the percentage of its citizens who know a second language as compared to other nations. To address these gaps, we need strong academic programs in critical world languages and intensive training in multi-disciplinary regional studies that are vital to our global economic competitiveness, national security, and other key priorities.

The extended deadline for Senate Members to sign on is April 7th.

JNCL-NCLIS is excited to announce that the World Language Advancement and Readiness Program (WLARP, formerly WLARA) has bipartisan support again for FY24 funding! This program provides three-year competitive grants to support the establishment, improvement, or expansion of world language learning in Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) schools and local education agencies with Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (JROTC) programs.

Representatives Jimmy Panetta (D-CA) and Young Kim (D-CA) have initiated a congressional sign-on letter in support of a $15 million request for WLARA for FY24. We need your help now to get as many Congressional signatures on this letter as possible by Friday, March 17th 5PM ET.  
Please reach out to your House members and ask them to sign on to the World Language Advancement and Readiness Program in FY24 Dear Colleague letter in support of $15 million in the Defense Appropriations bill for the World Language Advancement and Readiness Program (WLARP).

A request has been made for help with this research.  Please consider participating.

We invite you to participate in a research study. The purpose of this study is to examine university professors’, adjuncts’, and instructors’ experiences teaching foreign languages. You are invited to participate in this research study because you are a professor in a language program at a college or university. The survey takes about 10-15 minutes to complete.

The names of interested participants who complete the survey will be eligible to win one of ten $50 Visa gifts cards.

Resources for the Upcoming Months

Hey everyone.  I hope that if you attended ACTFL you returned energized and ready to tackle the next few months.  We are so pleased that we had the opportunity to partner with ACTFL right here in Boston for an in-person conference after so many virtual experiences.  It was so wonderful to see friends and colleagues from across the nation and to meet new colleagues and make new friends.  Thanks to all who made this possible.

CARLA Update Of Interest

Social Justice in Language Education Update
The Center for Advanced Research on Language Acquisition (CARLA) at the University of Minnesota is pleased to announce two new resources offered through its Social Justice in Language Education initiative.

Social Justice Planning Templates–New!
To help language educators incorporate social justice themes into their language classes, CARLA has developed three interrelated planning templates for creating curricular units grounded in target language texts: a curricular unit overview template, a lesson planning template, and a summative assessment template. These three templates will help language educators enact two complementary critical pedagogies that support the teaching of social justice topics: the multiliteracies framework (Cope & Kalantzis, 2015; New London Group, 1996) and the five components of social justice education (Hackman, 2005). The templates also incorporate social justice standards from the domains of identity, diversity, justice, and action (Learning for Justice, 2021).

To illustrate how the templates can be used to support social justice in language education, CARLA has also developed a two-week-long curricular unit titled Multicultural Paris, intended for intermediate-level learners of French. Lauren Goodspeed is a Lecturer in the Department of French and Italian and Director of the French Language Program. She is a co-leader of the LRC initiative Social Justice in Language Education.
Kate Paesani is the Director of the Center for Advanced Research on Language Acquisition (CARLA) and an Associate Professor in the Department of French and Italian. She is a co-leader of the LRC initiative Social Justice in Language Education.

OLA Grants

OLA is pleased to inform districts of the two competitive grant opportunities:

  • Fund Code 181 establishes $2,500,000 to support districts in English Learner Education programming under three goals: 1)to develop and/or implement an alternative bilingual ELE program for English learners, 2)to create or continue a “grow your own” bilingual education hub to improve Bilingual Education educator pipeline, and 3)to develop high quality ESL and or dual language curriculum or to enrich the existing ESL and/or dual language curricula or to align purchased curricular materials to to WIDA Standards and MA Frameworks. Applications for Fund Code 181 will be due September 30, 2022.
  • Fund Code 189 establishes $750,000 to support districts in measuring and building  proficiency in languages other than English under two goals: 1) to assess proficiency in languages other than English, including assessments that may also be applied toward the State Seal of Biliteracy, and 2) to support participation in the World Languages Framework Implementation series. Applications will be due September 16th, 2022.

Dear Colleagues and Friends of Ms ChinHuei Yeh.

We are deeply saddened by the untimely passing of Ms. Chinhuei Yeh.  Ms. Yeh dedicated her life selflessly in teaching and sharing knowledge with others through various professional development platforms from local workshops to the national ACTFL Convention. In celebration of her amazing life, and to create a long-lasting legacy for her, CLASS has established a Chinhuei Yeh Memorial Scholarship that will annually fund a first-time attendee to the ACTFL Convention.
