FOUNDATIONS OF PROFICIENCY

Back by popular demand, Greg Duncan–an internationally recognized expert in World Language education–will lead the Foundations strand of the Proficiency Academy. In the Foundations strand, Greg will guide you through the ACTFL Proficiency levels, show you how to set proficiency targets for your program or course, help you design engaging and authentic performance assessments and rubrics, connect proficiency to course units and lessons using the NCSSFL-ACTFL Can-Do Statements, and prepare you to be an empowered educator with the support of the Teacher Effectiveness for Language Learning (TELL) Project. In addition to Greg’s high-quality sessions, you will join a smaller break-out group during the Academy led by facilitators experienced in teaching for proficiency. Handson and interactive, you will leave the Academy invigorated and with concrete materials to use when you return to school! Relevant to teachers of all languages. If you have not attended Proficiency Academy before (regardless of your background experience as a teacher), be sure to sign up for this strand. Come join the Proficiency movement!

PRINCIPLES OF PROFICIENCY: Advanced Curriculum & Lesson Design

Principles of Proficiency: Proficiency for All Learners
New to Proficiency Academy this year is Leslie Grahn, who will lead our Principles of Proficiency strand, focusing on Proficiency for All Learners. Leslie will lead us through us exploring and using student data to make informed instructional decisions to best support our learners, developing tiered and scaffolded activities for all learners, and integrating authentic resources in communicative tasks. Leslie will also present the Gradual Release of Responsibility Framework, which includes guided instruction, teacher modeling, think-alouds, spiraled questions, and more, all with the goal of empowering all learners to communicative independence. Leslie has twenty-seven years of language teaching experience at the middle and high school levels and twelve years of experience at the central office level, most recently as Coordinator of World Languages for the Howard County Public School System in Maryland. She has been a course instructor on foreign language teaching methods and differentiated instruction and frequent presenter at state, regional, and national conferences, specializing in best practices, specifically hands-on, interactive strategies. She facilitates workshops on the topics of student engagement, rigor, authentic resources, and differentiated instruction. Leslie is also the co-author of The Keys to Strategies for Language Instruction and serves on the boards of NECTFL, NADSFL, and ACTFL.

Due to the advanced nature of this strand, only returning attendees will be allowed to register. Anyone who has not previously attended Proficiency Academy will automatically be moved to the Foundations strand.
